The stress due to the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes seems to have got to customers and bank employees alike. While another customer died while waiting in a queue to exchange notes yesterday, an employee died in a Pune bank.

The fatal wait
The family of the customer, Deepak Shah (53), said he had been going to the Bassein Catholic Bank branch at Bhayander since the past three days, and was standing in the queue from 7 am to exchange the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, when he complained of chest pain and collapsed on the floor.

He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.
Rasik Shah, brother of Deepak said that he had an imitation jewellery business and stayed with his daughter and wife at Devchandnagar, Bhayander West.
“The incident occurred around 9.30 am. Shah’s family told us he complained of pain in the chest. People rushed him to the Sharadha hospital, but he was declared dead before admission. Our officials visited his house. No complaint was registered,” said Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Kamble, Bhayander police station.
Bank employee dies
The employee died while he was storing money in the bank in Pune. Tukaram alias Appa Ganbhau Tanpure (53) was a resident of Rajguru in Khed.
Tukaram worked as a senior clerk with State Bank of India.
“He was in charge of handling the mob, and was also asked to tag the note bundles and keep them in the treasure room of the bank,” said a family member.
The branch manager, Shridhar Jadhav, said, “Tukaram was a senior employee of our bank. We addressed him as appa.”
“The incident took place around 12.30 pm when he went to keep the notes in the treasure room, and was alone in it. Later, a few staff members looked for him and found him lying unconscious in the room. We rushed him to hospital, but he was declared dead. He had a heart attack. It’s an unfortunate incident,” Jadhav added, explaining what happened.
