TYUMEN, Russia, Nov. 16 (UPI) — Ice crystals in the sky over Russia created an optical illusion that made it appear as if there were three suns and an upside-down rainbow in the sky.
A video filmed Sunday near the city of Tyumen shows the sun flanked by a pair of sundogs, phantom suns caused by light refracting from hexagonal ice crystals low in the atmosphere.
The filmer said the temperature was 4 degrees below zero at the time, allowing for the necessary crystals to form.
The upside-down rainbow effect was also caused by the ice crystals, rather than the conditions that normally create a rainbow, the uploader said.
