‘I always tell myself that I need to study and my parents have been so supportive’

Kathleen Murray missed classes because of her sickness this year.

But it did not stop her from achieving her academic goal. She was announced the dux of Suva Methodist Primary School during the prizegiving ceremony yesterday.

Her mother, Talei Murray, said: “I am really speechless today.”

She said Kathleen sometimes missed two to three weeks of school but that didn’t affect her academic work.

“She managed to get through and we are very proud of her. It’s a huge surprise for the both of us,” she said.

She said that she would never stop believing in Kathleen.

“We will never lose hope and we are seeing a brighter future in her,” she said.

“I am really happy for her. She is always committed when it comes to her school work, a hardworking and well-mannered girl and she deserved it,” said Mrs Murray.

Mrs Murray added that her daughter had made her and her husband proud and also her whole family.

Meanwhile, Kathleen said she was shocked when her teacher told her the good news she wasn’t expecting.

“I am so happy and I thank the Lord,” she said.

“I always tell myself that I need to study and my parents have been so supportive. I’ve been praying and studying and the Lord has really helped me through till now. This year has been very challenging and I thank my teachers and parents for their support.

“I’m hoping for the best, and I want to continue this success journey and become a scientist one day,” she said.

Kathleen is the eldest in the family and she will be joining Gospel High School next year.

Out of eight subjects, Kathleen received subject prizes for six subjects in her class, with a total mark of 574 out of 600.
