Ulfa-I asks people of Assam to unite against citizenship bill
A camp was organized here today to help Pakistani nationals seeking Indian citizenship in the application process.
GUWAHATI: As the clamour against the Centre's move to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955, rises, banned outfit Ulfa (Independent) asked indigenous people of the state to unite against the move.
"Throughout history, Assam and its indigenous population have been victims of linguistic and religious politics. Only sovereignty can save the state from such politics," Abhijit Asom, the hardline faction's chairman, said in an email statement.
The amendment would enable illegal migrants belonging to religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to settle in the country and make them eligible for Indian citizenship.

Earlier, Ulfa (I) had warned Bengali-speaking Indian Hindus to stay away from pressing the Centre's move, which it has described as 'anti-indigenous'. "Ulfa (I) will not stand by as a mere spectator if anyone tries to thwart the voice of the indigenous people," the outfit had said.
