LUCKNOW: Adeep has been in KGMU's trauma centre for eight days. His brother Ajeet, who brought him from Unnao after an accident, said, "I can either save all the little change that I have for his tests and medicines from outside, or eat proper meals."

With banks shut for Guru Nanak Jayanti and very few ATMs dispensing cash, Monday turned out to be an even more chaotic day for patients and their relatives in city hospitals. Running around with tests and medical prescriptions, the day was tougher for attendants as they managed time between long ATM queues, borrowing money from relatives or calling people over from their villages with cash.
"Medicines from outside were prescribed for him twice, but we could only manage once with the money available. Till when will we survive on such little money?" asked Adeep.
On the other end of the hospital, Maya Ram from Bachrawa is tending to his father-in-law who broke his spinal cord after an accident two days ago.
"It was like hell. We have money in hand but we are unable to use it," he said. Since early Monday morning, Maya Ram and his relatives from the village have been running from one medical shop to another. "The bill was of Rs 746 and I gave the chemist a Rs 1,000 note which he refused to accept. What do we do?" said Parsa Ram, his younger brother.
