INDORE: While Indore Municipal Corporation planning to introduce new technology at trenching ground to convert garbage into electricity, the plan is unlikely to provide immediate relief for people living near the dump yard. The civic body would take at least two years to clear the waste dumped at the ground over the years.
"The plant that would convert waste into usable energy would be for the waste that would be generated every day after the unit is set up.
For the existing waste, we have another plan. We will take around two years to completely get rid of it," said IMC waste management consultant Asad Warsi.
Warsi further said that the waste that has turned into soil would be removed and used for land filling. "We would see if there are left over plastic and other usable substances. We will collect them and use it in the new system," Warsi said while talking to TOI.
The residents however alleged that they don't believe in the promises of IMC. "We started our agitation two years ago. No concrete step has been taken since then, the situation is deteriorating day by day. They have long term plans but we need immediate relief," said Sameer Karambelkar, a resident of the area.
However, officials of IMC said that they were taking immediate steps to curb the problem as well.
"We understand that we need to take immediate steps, we have made sure that rag pickers do not light fire. The incidents of fire have reduced in the recent times," Warsi said. Warsi also said that they were preparing a different slot for dumbing construction waste. Officials said that the land would be to plant trees in the area, they were also planning to make a garden on the dump yard.
