MANSA: Police officials in Punjab's Mansa district detained a resident of Fatehabad in Haryana and his driver with Rs 1 crore cash in denominations of the now invalid - Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 - currency notes.
The money was being carried in an SUV and the occupants failed to provide details about its source. The police have informed Income Tax authorities and made a diary entry.
The IT authorities are further investigating the case and questioning the two men.
Police officials told TOI that the money was recovered from Sandeep Singh, 30, a commission agent. He told the cops that he had brought the cash to make payments to farmers after selling wheat to government agencies. Sources said that although it is common for commission agents to carry large amounts of cash with them when payments have to be made, there are some unanswered questions in this case.
"Why would farmers accept Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes just when the demonetisation process is on?" asked a police officer. "Also, it is rare for a commission agent to make a payment in another state. All the same, the I-T officials will now investigate the case." The cops have also handed over Singh's driver Raj Pal, also from Fatehabad, to the I-T officials.
Mansa SSP Mukhwinder Singh said, "The police received a tip-off about some unauthorised money being transported through the small town of Sardulgarh after which they put up a checkpoint. The police party led by SHO Jagtar Singh stopped the car while it was on its way from Sardulgarh to Ratia in Haryana and recovered thet cash in the invalid currency."
An income tax official on condition of anonymity said, "IT authorities are investigating about the source of the seized money".
