NAGPUR: India continues to be a country of contradictions. Aheri in Gadchiroli and Nagpur are just 250 km apart, but in Aheri, tribals don’t have access to food and health services while in Nagpur state-of-the-art health care is available, said Dr Kanna Madavi, medical superintendent of Aheri sub district hospital, here on Saturday.
“In fact, entire country is full of such examples.
We may have progressed a lot but we have much more to achieve. It’s a long way to go,” said Dr Madavi while delivering the inaugural address at the two day annual conference of Nagpur Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society (NOGS), ‘Gynaecon — Evidence based obstetrics’.
Earlier speaking on the occasion Meera Khadakkar, former principal judge of family court, Nagpur, told the obstetricians and gynaecologists to continue their war against maternal mortality and move towards safe motherhood. She said, “Safe motherhood should be a mission for every doctor as only a healthy woman can create a healthy family, thereby a healthy society.”
To mark the occasion NOGS presented 87-year-old Dr Pramila Asolkar with lifetime achievement award. Dr Shama Kedar was honoured with the NOGS gold medal.
Addressing the gathering, NOGS president Dr Anuradha Ridhorkar called upon all the doctors to break the barriers of urban and rural, government and private and be a part of the ‘Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matratva Abhiyan’ and work for safe motherhood. She challenged each participant in the conference to join the war against maternal mortality, infant mortality, anaemia as it was their duty and not obligation.
Professor of gynaecology at KEM Hospital, Mumbai, Dr Vinita Salvi, also spoke on the occasion. NOGS secretary Dr Shili Sud proposed a vote of thanks.
