Cong rally in Abohar village today

The Punjab Congress will hold a rally at the tail-end of the canal system in Khuyiansarwer village on the Abohar-Sriganganagar road tomorrow morning to highlight the Akalis’ “mishandling” of the SYL case in the Supreme Court.

Khuyiansarwer, a village in Fazilka district and also a block (sub-tehsil) within the Abohar tehsil, is the area likely to be the worst affected if the SC verdict is implemented.

PPCC vice-president Sunil Jakhar, the organiser of the rally, visited the village today to oversee the preparations.

PPCC chief Capt Amarinder Singh will lead the party’s show of strength, while state party affairs incharge Asha Kumari and Rajya Sabha MPs Partap Singh Bajwa and Shamsher Singh Dullo are among the prominent leaders expected to attend the rally.

A Congress press release said the rally was aimed at sending out a message to the state and central governments that the party stood in solidarity with the people of Punjab and would protect their interests on coming to power.

Meanwhile, Kisan Sangharsh Samiti (Rajasthan) spokesman Subhash Sehgal said the farmers of Sriganganagar would stand with their Punjab brethren in their battle against the SYL canal. “In the past three decades, the state’s population has increased manifold and the demand for water has gone up proportionately. How can Punjab afford to spare water for Haryana?” he asked.

Cong workers burn govt’s effigies

Sangrur/Hoshiarpur: Congress workers burnt an effigy of the Punjab Government in Sangrur on Saturday, alleging that it had failed to protect the state’s riverwaters. Parminder Sharma, Sangrur block president of the Congress, led the protesters. In Hoshiarpur, Congressmen led by PPCC general secretary and MLA Sunder Sham burnt effigies of PM Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, accusing them of failing to protect the interests of Punjab. tns
