Resignation of Punjab Congress MLAs over SYL issue theatrics: Tarun Chugh

Chandigarh, Nov 12:  Terming the resignation of 42 Punjab Congress MLAs and Amarinder Singh from his Lok Sabha seat over the SYL issue as “theatrics”, BJP leader Tarun Chugh today alleged that the party’s state unit leaders are “pretending to be martyrs without sacrificing anything”. He also said the SAD-BJP government will “not allow even a single drop of water” flow out of Punjab. “It is surprising that Congress decided to indulge in theatrics by resigning when the term of the present Assembly is scheduled to end in a matter of just two months,” BJP’s national secretary Tarun Chugh said. “The people of Punjab were surprised as to why all the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs of Congress were not resigning from their posts.

It is “height of betrayal” that Amarinder Singh who was witness to the “exploitation” of Punjab farmers “at the hands” of Indira Gandhi is now claiming to be their sympathiser by resigning from a post which he is likely to quit as he is all set to contest the state Assembly polls from Patiala, Chugh claimed. “The SAD-BJP government will not allow even a single drop of water to flow out of Punjab and is all set to explore all legal possibilities in this regard,” the BJP leader claimed, adding both the alliance partners, with the help of the people of Punjab, will fight this battle in a peaceful manner.

He also said it is “unfortunate and ridiculous” that small-time state Congress leaders burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Supreme Court on Thursday held as unconstitutional the 2004 law passed by Punjab to terminate the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal water sharing agreement with neighbouring states. The judgement makes it clear that the Punjab Termination of Agreements Act, 2004 is “unconstitutional” and Punjab could not have taken a “unilateral” decision to terminate the water sharing agreement with Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Chandigarh.
