Mahbubabad: Pressure from her son to part with about 50 lakh earned from sale of family land reportedly forced a 50-year-old woman to commit suicide in
Shanigapuram village of Mahabubabad. Rumours spread soon that the woman took her life fearing that the money was worthless following the demonitisation of 500 and 1,000 notes.
However, Mahbubabad rural police inspector
Krishna Reddy on Friday discounted the rumours.
He said
Kandukuri Vinoda's "death was a result of pressure from her son Srinivas to deposit 50 lakh earned from the sale of land into his personal bank account." The family spent a little more than 4 lakh earned from the sale and kept 50 lakh at home, police said. Vinoda took her life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her home after others went to bed on Wednesday night.
Her body was discovered on Thursday morning. She died before being taken to the hospital. "We have registered a case under section 174 of the CrPC. Preliminary investigations revealed that Vinoda was being asked by her son for the past three months to give him the money," Krishna Reddy said.
Srinivas told the police that his mother took her life upon hearing that 500 and 1,000 notes were no longer valid. However, according to the officer, Vinoda's daughters Radhika and Ranjitha complained that their brother pressurised their mother to give him the money leading to her resorting to such an extreme step.
