The University of Wollongong and The Bradman Foundation jointly award the Bradman Scholarship to an undergraduate or postgraduate student from India for his or her all round performance in academic, social as well as cricketing skills. The recipient for 2017 is Vigneshwaran Subramani from Chennai, who is currently pursuing his Masters in Engineering from the university of Wollongong. The selection panel for the scholarship believed that Vigneshwaran's character reflected the ideals of the legendary Sir Donald Bradman. Speaking to DNA about his experience Vigneshwaran said it has been a dream come true to study in Australia. "I am really enjoying it there.

The people, infrastructure and the education has been great. There are people from all over the world so you get a lot of exposure".

Receiving the scholarship has changed his life, and his dream of doing research isn't distant anymore. "I used to work as a Mechanical Design Engineer and wanted to do research, this scholarship has really helped financially and I have got the chance of researching in the field of medical equipments and design a product that is useful to the society," he shares.

Vigneshwaran received the scholarship for his outstanding academic as well as sporting skills, but managing the two can get tough. "Playing cricket as well as studying is equally important to me and I enjoy them both. Also my parents taught me the importance of balancing the two in my life, which made it easier," adds Vigneshwaran, whose parents are also avid cricket lovers. The young all-rounder is a fan of Sachin Tendulkar and draws a lot of inspiration for his bowling from Brett Lee.

Vignesh intends to return to India after his education, as he is well-aware of what tempts Indians to live abroad and not return. "The culture, the people and the opportunities abroad are so good that people are tempted to continue living there.," he emphasises.

"Never stop playing because one has to study. Keep trying and don't let go for you never know when opportunity knocks at your door," says this wise young scholar.
