Good morning Sunners, welcome to your Saturday – albeit a bit of a wet one.

MetService has issued a severe weather watch for the Bay of Plenty, with lots of rain and a chance of squally thunder day, so it's kind of the perfect day to get a little dirty at Matahui School's Mud Run, or to catch the launch of local bluesman Mike Garner's new album down on The Strand.

People of all ages can relive their childhoods and get back in the dirt in the fun-filled Matahui School's Mud Run, with racing getting underway at 11am.

The 2.5km course based at the School passes through two adjoining properties, involves a number of man-made and natural obstacles, plus a 50m waterslide and a large section of thick black mud.

The mud run will have a competitive event for men, women, high school, intermediate and primary children in Years 4-6 to take muddy honours of the course. There's also a teams' section, which will see groups of four work together to achieve the fastest time through the course.

There's be loads of spot prizes and prizes for the best costume, muddiest, oldest and youngest participants, plus a special event for preschool-aged children which includes an obstacle course, slippery slide and some special surprises along the way.

Registrations for the competitive leg open at 10.30am for an 11am start, while non-competitive participants need to sign up at 11.30am for a 12 noon start. The event costs $10 per adult, $5 per child under-15, $2 for pre-schoolers and $40 per team.

A range of food and refreshments will also be available and a prize giving will follow the closure of the course at 2pm.

For more information visit the Matahui School Facebook page.

If keeping clean and dry while listening to some great home grown blues and a beer is more your thing then head down to Brew Craft Beer Pub on The Strand for the musical styles of local bluesman Mike Garner, from 4pm to 7pm.

The gig will launch Mike's new album 40 Below Blues, his first since 2011, and sees the prominent blues musician return to his first loves – the old time country blues that drew him into the music.

The afternoon show will also feature percussionist Warren Houston, Kokomo frontman Derek Jacombs and Robbie Lavën who also appears on Mike's new album.
