COIMBATORE: The city police have registered a case against Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) state president Arjun Sampath and five other members of the party for gathering unlawfully and bursting crackers in front of the district collectorate here on Wednesday.
The HMK men burst crackers and distributed sweets to the general public to celebrate the demonetisation of the 500 and 1,000 currency notes.
The Race Course police registered a case against Arjun Sampath and five others under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly) and 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter) of the IPC.

When contacted, Arjun said the public has the right to celebrate and share their joy with the people. But police restricted the HMK members to celebrate the PM's announcement. "We condemn the police action. They have to withdraw the case registered against us," he said.
