Britain will support Qatar in developing and delivering a successful 2022 World Cup, UK Minister for Trade and Investment Greg Hands has said.
Speaking during the ?Sport is GREAT' press conference on Wednesday, the Member of Parliament for Chelsea and Fulham said:"In twelve days time it will be precisely six years to the day that Qatar will host the biggest spectacle in world football, the 2022 World Cup.
"I am proud to say that the UK wants the World Cup to be a tremendous and huge success, and the UK wants to be a part of that success through the involvement of business, government and of course we hope the participation of our football teams."
Also at the event were Hassan al Thawadi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy and Dr Thani al Kuwari, Secretary-General of Qatar Olympic Committee. They gave keynote speeches outlining their vision for the sporting sector in Qatar.
Hands, who led a trade delegation to the country, said he wants to demonstrate UK's capabilities in the global sport sector and explain why the UK is perfectly placed to be Qatar's key partner in helping to deliver a successful 2022 World Cup.
"The UK wants to be Qatar's partner in developing and delivering a successful World Cup using our experience and expertise gained from delivering some of the biggest global sporting event around the world," he said.
Hands added that since the Sydney Games in 2000, there has been a British stamp on any every major sporting event including the Commonwealth Games, World Cups and Olympics. He said the UK provided the stadium architecture to the Sochi Winter Olympic Games, cutting edge engineering for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, designed and fitted the athletes dining facility at the Rio Games.
Ahead of the 2022 mundial, Qatar is building eight stadiums, 64 training grounds, 5 fans zones, accommodation and as well as undergoing significant development in its road, rail and airport infrastructure."This is a considerable task but am delighted that out of the 600 UK companies registered in Qatar, many are already working on World Cup supply chain projects. UK innovation, know-how and expertise are being put to work," Hands said.
"Even after the 2022 World Cup the UK is ready willing to help Qatar create a lasting legacy that lays the foundation for the four pillars of the Vision 2030. Just as we did with our London Olympic Park and surrounding area, we can use our experience to help repurpose infrastructure for general public use."
Speaking at the event, Thawadi lauded the relationship between UK companies and the Supreme Committee.
He said that UK businesses will play a significant role in preparations for the 2022 World Cup. The SC has this year appointed Impact Ltd as an independent third party workers' welfare monitor.
Thawadi praised UK's illustrious history of sports hosting expertise, referencing English Premier League, Wimbledon and Royal Ascot.
"Relations between Qatar and the UK have grown ever stronger over our two countries' rich histories," he said.
"In the field of sports in particular, which is integral to both nations' societies, our cooperation is creating a lasting, positive impact."
He also explained his hopes of replicating the remarkable social effects of the London Olympic Games.
"The 2022 World Cup has the potential to transform event in our region. It will bring immense pride to the people of the Middle East as 2012 Games did for Londoners."
"Our region deserves the best chance to be in the news for the right reasons and we sincerely believe hosting the World Cup can rewrite our vision."
