MUMBAI: A senior citizen was robbed of cash and jewellery worth Rs22 lakh by two bike-borne men in Kandivli (west) on Monday afternoon. The incident took place when
Navinchandra Jhaveri (71) was on his way home from a bank. The police are now scanning footage from cameras installed in the vicinity for clues.
The Kandivli resident’s married daughter, who lives abroad, is on a visit to India.
Jhaveri had gone to the bank to pick up her jewellery and foreign currency kept in his locker.
Around 3pm, he was returning home with a pouch that contained $1,000, besides a pair of diamond and platinum earrings and a diamond and platinum mangalsutra.
A senior officer from
Kandivli police station said that Jhaveri was walking along a bus stop near
Kamla Vihar Sports Club when two men on a bike accosted him. “They snatched his pouch and fled. The rider of the bike had a helmet on but the pillion rider’s face was visible,” said the officer.
Jhaveri later approached the police with a complaint. He was not hurt but was in shock. “Although it’s a bag-snatching case, we have registered an offence of robbery as the robbers, when arreted, will face tougher punishment under this section,” said the officer.
The police suspect that the robbers had kept a watch on Jhaveri and knew he was carrying valuables.
