​ ABVP protest against election cancellation and use of force on students, Samajwadis start hunger strike

Agra: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members on Wednesday staged protest against Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar University administration decision to cancel student union election and lathicharge on student, which took place on Tuesday. Meanwhile, demanding declaration of new dates of election and issue of notification in this regard, Samajwadi Chatra Sabha (SCS) students sat on hunger strike at Paliwal campus.
Before cancelation of election, ABVP candidates were in dominant position as the nominations of National Students' Union of India (NSUI) candidates' were cancelled by the university, citing technical glitches and SCS was not allowed to file nomination for post of union president. University administration claimed the treatment to NSUI and SCS was as per the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.
On Tuesday, NSUI accused the varsity of favoring ABVP. NSUI student union president candidate Ashutosh Vimal, climbed atop water tank at the varsity’s Khandari campus following which university cancelled the election.
ABVP spokesperson Devansh Bhatt said, “The university decision of canceling election is undemocratic. We want university to conduct election on same nominations and as per the Lyngdoh committee declaration. We have asked city magistrate to probe the lathicharge on student and take action against those responsible for it.”
Alok Yadav, SCS district head said, “Six of our members have initiated hunger at Paliwal campus which will continue till varsity declare fresh election schedule.”
Professor Rajendra Sharma, chief election officer said, “Session 2016-17 student union election has been cancelled due to disturbance to law and order situation by different student union organization on the campus. Fresh notification will be issued once peace is established.”
