KOTTAYAM: After a decade, paddy farming will restart in Methran Kayal on Thursday. Agricultural Minister V S Sunil Kumar will launch sowing operations at 4pm. The function which will be held at the premises of the fields will be presided by the local MLA Suresh Kurup.
Agriculture production commissioner Raju Narayana Swamy will explain the project to the gathering. Jose K Mani MP will be the chief guest.
This year farming will be launched in 25 acres of land belonging to five farmers.
Meanwhile, Rakindo Developers Pvt Ltd, promoters of the proposed Kumarakom Eco-Tourism Village project, which owns nearly 378 acres of land in the over 400 acre Methran Kayal, is planning to start paddy farming in 50 acres of land. However, they will be doing the farming all by themselves and will not join the Government initiative in resuming farming here.
The company have decided to adhere strictly to organic farming and have assigned a certified organic farming consultant for an eco-friendly paddy cultivation. The company has also moved the court challenging the move by the previous UDF Government to cancel their project. "Since letters regarding launching farming were sent only to five of the 33 subsidiary land owning companies here, we will be beginning farming only in those fields now.
However, our original plan is to launch farming in nearly 200 acres of land. That we will decide later as our case is under consideration of the court," said a company representative.
Government has spent around Rs 80 lakhs for setting up the field for farming. This includes the strengthening of the outer bunds and dewatering the fields.
