India's Move to Revamp Its Large-Currency Notes -- The Numbers

The size of India’s new, magenta-colored 2,000-rupee bank note that replaces the 1,000-rupee note. The new note will fit into wallets more easily than the old 1,000-rupee note which was 73mm tall and 177mm long.

When the 500-rupee note was first introduced in India. The new “stone gray” note will be 17mm slimmer than its predecessor and 10mm shorter.

The number of 500- and 1,000-rupee notes India’s central bank will have to destroy, according to numbers collated in March by the Reserve Bank of India. The notes are worth 14.18 billion rupees. Of these, 15.7 billion bank notes are 500-rupee notes and 6.3 billion bills are of the 1,000-rupee denomination.

The amount of 100-rupee notes the RBI will have to print to make up for the demonetization of the old higher value 500 and 1,000-rupee notes.
