Junior Indonesian shuttlers in the 19-year-old category ranked fifth at the recent World Junior Championship held in Bilbao, Spain. The players were stopped in the quarterfinal after being beaten by Malaysia 3-1.

However, they made up their position by defeating India 3-0 and Taipei 3-1, thus securing fifth place.

Gregoria Mariska, who played under women-single category, had become the key player who decided Indonesia’s victory over Taipei after long rubber set games against Taipei’s Jhou Shih Jyun.

Team manager Fung Permadi acknowledged that the team failed to meet expectations but realized it was the best they could do.

“Reality bites. Despite our dissatisfaction, this is the best that we can achieve right now. We learned our lesson and will improve in the future,” he said.

In a similar vein, contingent chief Achmad Budiharto said there must be a thorough evaluation of the young players for further improvement.

“We have witnessed some weaknesses in our men’s singles category and the women’s singles definitely need to be strengthened,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

Last year, the team managed to secure one silver and one bronze medal, earning it fourth position overall.

Fung Permadi said the players were still in their prime and were ready for the Eye Level tournament, which will commence on Tuesday. However, he also warned the players to maintain their condition, especially in a challenging climate.

Back home, Indonesian players secured medals in three categories at the USM Victor Indonesia International Challenge 2016 throughout all finals in the mixed doubles, women’s singles and men’s singles categories.

Senior pair Irfan Fadhilah and Weni Anggraini met their juniors Yantoni Edy Saputra and Marsheilla Gischa Islami in the final. Yantoni/Gischa won the game.

As for the women’s singles category, a classic duel between Hanna Ramadini and Fitriani reoccurred, with Fitriani emerging the winner.

Previously, their most recent battle was during the 19th edition of the National Games, held in Cirebon, West Java, in October and also won by Fitriani.

Indonesian Shesar Hiren Rhustavito completed the achievement by defeating Thailand’s Suppanyu Avihingsanon.

“I must train harder to catch up with my fellow athletes,” he said, adding that Suppanyu was a worthy opponent from whom he had learned a lot.
