Valtteri Bottas expects Lance Stroll to learn quickly at Williams

Valtteri Bottas says he expects new Williams teammate Lance Stroll to learn quickly when the Canadian youngster makes his Formula One debut next season.

Last week Williams confirmed Stroll would be replacing the retiring Felipe Massa as Bottas' teammate in 2017. Stroll, who won the 2016 European Formula 3 championship, his third title in as many years, only turned 18 at the end of October and will become the second-youngest driver to start a F1 race at the Australian Grand Prix next year.

"I don't need to advise him, he's a talented driver," Bottas said. "I'm sure he'll learn a lot quickly and he'll be up to speed very quickly. As a team, we'll do everything we can to help him improve.

"There are plenty of things to learn when you jump from any category. There are many more people in the team, there is a lot you to learn technically from the car so I will help in the ways I can. He has plenty of talent, I am sure he will do fine.

"He's going to learn quickly, I'm looking forward to being paired with him and pushing the team forward."

Stroll's unconventional career move to bypass both GP3 and GP2 and make the jump straight into F1 has similarities with Bottas' own route to F1. The Finn elected not to take part in a full-time racing campaign during 2012 after winning the GP3 series in 2011 in order to focus on test and reserve driver roles with Williams, before being promoted to a race seat in 2013.

When asked about Stroll's decision, Bottas replied: "There's no driver that wouldn't take the opportunity to drive in Formula One if it's there."
