A DAY after the accident on the South end of the Eastern Freeway when a taxi crashed into the ramp that led to the death of six persons, the Dongri police — where an FIR was registered — will be writing to the traffic police to get footage from the CCTV cameras installed on the accident site’s stretch.
While the police have registered a case against the driver, Mangru Verma, they are waiting for him to recuperate, after which he will be placed under formal arrest. Neighbours of Mangru, in the Wadala area, are still finding it difficult to come to terms with the tragedy and are upset with him.

Six people, including a six-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, were killed and three others injured after a taxi carrying nine people crashed on the Eastern Freeway on Saturday morning. Mangru lost control of the Hyundai Santro and the car crashed on the freeway’s exit ramp at Wadi Bunder, while they were on the way to Mumbadevi temple. Members of two families travelling in the taxi lost their lives in the accident.
Arun Verma, Mangru’s neighbour from Wadala, said, “We are finding it difficult to come to terms with the tragedy. There is a wave of anger we neighbours are feeling against Mangru because of whom the accident took place. While I had gone to the hospital yesterday, I could not bring myself to go and meet him as I was still furious with him.” Arun added that Mangru’s elder brother, who also resides in Wadala, performed the last rites of Mangru’s wife and children, who also died in the accident, at Shivaji Park on Sunday.
Meanwhile, senior inspector of Dongri Ankush Katkar said they will be writing to the traffic police to get footage of the stretch where the accident took place. “We have also sent the blood sample to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to see if there was presence of alcohol in the blood,” Katkar said. Dr T P Lahane, dean of the JJ hospital where Mangru is recuperating, said, “Two of the three injured have been discharged. The driver is recovering but is conscious and stable.”
