As part of the smart city project, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) installed around 37 more closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) in 11 locations in the Kalamboli node.

In August, CIDCO had CCTV based surveillance project wherein in phase I, a total 124 CCTV cameras were  installed in the Kharghar node. The surveillance system provides real time details which will help police to solve crime at faster pace.

By the end of 2016, the rest of the nodes will be equipped with CCTV cameras and other smart city components like emergency calling box, public address system, variable messaging signs and connectivity of smart city servers.

A CIDCO official said, “No one can imagine a smart city without a competent surveillance system. This not only helps police detect cases fast but also sends a strong message to  wrongdoers that they cannot take the city for granted.”

In order to control crime under the CIDCO jurisdiction, a joint programme including the Navi Mumbai police carried out surveys of important junctions, sensitive locations, markets, railway stations, bus stops, toll plazas and locations that receive large number of footfalls. Additionally a broader list was prepared to include more places that merit surveillance.

City police had suggested 574 cameras required to be installed at 293 locations in South Navi Mumbai. Of those, 555 will be fixed angle while 19 will be pan-tilt-zoom cameras.

The cost of equipping South Navi Mumbai with CCTV surveillance is around Rs 108 crore and it is likely to be completed by the end of the year. Upon completion, the total area covered under the surveillance system will include Kharghar, Kamothe, Panvel, New Panvel, Ulwe, Dronagiri, Uran and Nhava Sheva.

According to officials from Navi Mumbai police sources, these cameras will help police improve detection rates for  urban crime.
