Haridwar, November 5

The police today arrested three persons from Shivalik Nagar in connection with chain snatching incidents in the city.

Haridwar SSSP Rajeev Swarup said Ankit Saini and Suraj Saini, residents of Santarshah, Bahadarabad, and Anand Gaurav, a Kankhal-based jeweller, were arrested in connection with two incidents of chain snatching at Ranipur and Shivalik Nagar on October 29 and November 3, respectively.

On the basis of CCTV footages, in which Ankit and Suraj were spotted on a black motorbike, a special investigative team (SIT), led by Ranipur SHO Pradeep Bisht and SSI Pradeep Rawat was formed.

During checking at Shivalik Nagar, the police team found two persons riding a motorcycle of the same make. Initially, both denied of involvement in any chain snatching case but during interrogation they broke down and confessed to the crimes.

Jeweller Anand Gaurav was also arrested as the chain snatchers used to sell the snatched chains to him, though he denied having any knowledge of the chains being looted.

Swarup said Ankit and Suraj Saini had cases registered against them under Sections 279/280/281/235 and 214 at Ranipur and Jwalapur police stations. Further interrogation was on against them.

SP City Manikant Mishra said five gold chains had been recovered from the arrested duo.

Asked regarding insufficient CCTVs in the city, the SSP said CCTVs had been put up at vital intersections, squares, railway station, bus stations and important buildings while traders, mall owners, housing societies and Resident Welfare Associations were being urged to install CCTVs in and around their buildings for effective monitoring.

The SSP has announced a reward of Rs 2,500 and recommended to Garhwal IGP Sanjay Gunjiyal for a grant to the probe team that comprised of sub inspectors Manoj Rawat, Abhinav Sharma, and constables Manoj Chaudhari, Rajeveer, Gambhir Tomar, Pramod Purohit, Amit, Vivek, Umesh and Ajay.
