ALMORA: Environmentalist and
Padma Shri awardee
Shekhar Pathak has termed the focus of the 2013 deluge as being only “Kedarnath’s tragedy” as delusional.
Pathak said that the tragedy was instead a “Himalayan one” since it affected the
Himalayas in places like
Himachal Pradesh and Nepal. “Around the time that
Kedarnath faced the huge deluge in June 2013, three hydro projects of Himachal Pradesh were washed away and many people died in Nepal due to excessive rainfall.
These tragedies are inter-linked since they happened in the Himalayas at around the same time,” he claimed.
Pathak, who was addressing a workshop on climate change in Almora on Saturday added that scientific institutions should study data going back at least a hundred years to find out how the ecosystem of the Himalayas has declined and “prepare a blueprint to stop further deterioration.”
