World No. 1 Angelique Kerber, who it was recently confirmed would end 2016 as the year-end top-ranked player, has had arguably the most consistent year of any player. The German made 3 of 4 Grand Slam finals, winning two – the Australian Open and the US Open, with victories over Serena Williams and Karolina Pliskova respectively.
Kerber, who has delivered strong performances at every slam, is, at 28, older than the newer crop of tennis players, and she has been able to pull out strong matches against one of the greatest tennis players of all time this year – Serena Williams – and even come out on top.
For Kerber, tennis was never just a pipe dream, and although she only recently hit her stride, this video shows just how long the player had nursed her professional sporting aspirations.
Here, a teenage Kerber, perhaps in the 8th or 9th standard at school, is pictured in front of a class timetable – and in the 13 years since then, the German talent has gone on to fulfil at least part of that dream, winning the Australian Open and finishing as the runner-up at Wimbledon to Serena Williams.
