The tractor was carrying its load up Harland Street toward Warialda Road when a malfunction with the tow hitch caused the trailer to roll down the hill.
“The trailer detached and travelled back down Harland Street towards Auburn Vale Road where it just avoided colliding with a couple of vehicles nearby that were driving up the hill. It actually collided into a power pole before coming to rest on the opposite side of the road on the intersection of Lang Street and Harland Street,” Constable Josh Butler of the Inverell Police said.
One car swerved off the road to avoid a collision when the trailer first became unhitched, while a second had to veer into Gordon Street.
The trailer then struck and dislodged a power pole, which caused the vehicle to spin onto the opposite side of the road, where it came to rest near a home.
“It’s fortunate that it actually hit the power pole. By that stage it had actually come up onto the nature strip on one side of the road and that’s where it’s collided with the power pole, but if that wasn’t there it possibly could have gone into someone’s house,” Constable Butler said.
“After it hit the power pole it turned the trailer around and the tow hitch has dug into the ground which has caused it to come to a stop. If it was still travelling in reverse, it probably would have continued until something stopped it,” he said.
Despite the severity of the incident, no injuries occurred.
“It was just fortunate that no one was walking down the road at the time to where it’s caused no injuries,” Constable Butler said.
Along with the police, the fire department, ambulance service and a council clean up crew were on site. Country Energy were also on the scene as the power pole had been dislodged and power lines were down.
