Lucknow: Cops booked for thrashing activists

Rihai Manch’s Public Relations Officer Anil Yadav said they had filed a complaint with Hazratganj police station against sub-inspectors Omkar Nath Yadav and Vijay Kumar Pandey alleging that the two had thrashed Rajiv brutally.

The Lucknow police Wednesday thrashed members of human rights group Rihai Manch, who were protesting in a park in Hazratganj against the alleged encounters of SIMI activists in Bhopal recently. Two people, identified as Rajiv Yadav and Shakeel Qureshi, sustained severe injuries on their legs, head and hands. Rajiv, who is general secretary of Rihai Manch, is undergoing treatment at KGMU’s Trauma Centre Hospital. Both are stable.

“We were staging a protest at Gandhi Pratima against the controversial encounter in Madhya Pradesh. Both sub-inspectors, Omkar Yadav and Vijay Kumar arrived at the spot and started pressurising us to remove the banners and posters put up. When Rajiv objected, the policemen started thrashing him. They also thrashed people who came forward to save Rajiv,” said Anil Yadav.

Raj Kumar Singh, SHO, Hazratganj police station, confirmed that they had registered the complaint.
