Open Road Films has acquired domestic distribution rights to “Spark,” an upcoming animated release that features the voices of Hilary Swank, Susan Sarandon, and Jessica Biel.

The film is inspired the 16th-century Chinese novel, “Journey to the West,” and follows a teenage monkey who leads a space expedition to save the planet from a cruel dictator. Patrick Stewart of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” fame, and Jace Norman from Nickelodeon’s “Henry Danger,” round out the voice cast. Aaron Woodley (“The Entitled”) directs and wrote the screenplay with Doug Hadders and Adam Rotstein. Open Road Films plans to release the film on April 14, 2017. The studio previously had an animation success with “The Nut Job” films. Its other films include the Best Picture-winning “Spotlight,” “Nightcrawler,” and “Chef.”

“Spark” is a co-production with ToonBox Entertainment, Redrover Co., Ltd, Shanghai Hoongman Technology Co., Ltd. and Gulfstream Pictures.
