BSF seizes gold worth Rs 18 lakh along Indo-Bangla border

KOLKATA: The Border Security Force (BSF), on Tuesday, seized 595.45 grams of gold that was being smuggled into India from across the border fence. An Indian villager from Tehatta in Nadia, who was carrying the gold, was apprehended.
"Information was received on Tuesday regarding smuggling of gold in the general area of Border Outpost Bistoganj under Sector Headquarters Berhampore.
On receiving information, a special operation was planned and launched by troops of the 15Bn BSF in the Old Bistoganj village that is located beyond the Indo-Bangladesh Border Fence (IBBF). During operation, the party stopped a person on a bicycle coming from the village. He was searched and the gold was recovered. The gold has been valued at nearly Rs 18,13,072," a senior BSF officer said.
During questioning, the man revealed his identity as Jahiruddin Seikh (76) from Old Bistoganj village in Tehatta, Nadia. He was handed over to the police in Tehatta with the gold for legal action. In 2016, the BSF's South Bengal Frontier seized nearly 14.103 kg of gold valued at about Rs 4,13,69,003. Twenty-one gold smugglers were also apprehended.
