RUDRAPUR: The city’s long wait for a new trenching ground will be over soon as the Rudrapur municipal corporation has been allotted four hectares of land for the purpose. The sub-divisional magistrate has passed an order for transfer of the land presently under AN Jha Inter College, Rampur Road, to the civic body. The city with a population of three lakh generates around 25 metric tonnes of garbage every day.
Deepti Singh, commissioner of Rudrapur municipal corporation, said that the city needed a new trenching ground as the existing ground at Dudhiyanagar, Kichha Road has already reached its full capacity.

According to the preliminary plans, a solid waste management plant will be set up for segregation of waste. Besides, the civic body will involve service of rag pickers to find saleable junk from the garbage collected and thus provide them a livelihood.
Singh told TOI, “Earlier a proposal for transfer of 10 acres land under the AN Jha Government Inter College premises located at Nainital-Rampur highway was submitted to the state government, but was turned down. A preliminary project report was again submitted to the secretary, urban development ministry, D S Garbyal, to allocate the land for a new trenching ground and got his approval.”
The corporation has been asked to submit a detailed project report (DPR) once the land has been transferred, added Singh.
Chairperson of the municipal corporation, Soni Koli, a BJP member, alleged that the government had adopted a lackadaisical approach towards solving the garbage problem in the city. She claimed that the existing trenching ground often leads to spill over of garbage on the Kiccha road, causing problem for commuters.
