It came as a surprise when
Akshay Kumar announced his next, 'Gold' to be directed by 'Talaash' director Reema Kagti and produced by Excel Entertainment. The film's teaser poster made it clear that 'Gold' is a sports film set in 1948 and tells the story of India clinching its first ever
gold medal at the Olympics.
Beyond this, nothing is known about the film. However, if recent reports are to be believed, 'Gold' is based on hockey legend Balbir Singh.
Akshay will reportedly be playing the character of Balbir. For those not in the know, Balbir was a part of the Indian hockey team at the 1948 Olympics. While he was the vice captain during 1952 Olympics, he led the team in 1956 in Melbourne. According to reports, the film will showcase how
Balbir Singh was the hero of the gold campaign that India enjoyed in the three editions of Olympics.
