2 women in river crushed to death under tree

MADURAI: Two women were killed when a tree fell on them while they were taking bath in a river at Ambasamudram in Tirunelveli district. One of the women had come to attend a marriage function in Tirunelveli from Chennai.
Police identified the women as Sabural Biwi, 50, wife of Abdul Masjid of Gurunath Nagar in Chennai, and Lakshmi, 45, wife of Lakshmanan of Sankarankovil Street in Ambasamudram.
Police said the women had gone to take bath in Thamirabarani river on Sunday evening separately, but were close to each other when the accident took place. While Sabural Biwi was killed on the spot, Lakshmi died at the hospital.
Sabural Biwi,who had gone to a relative's place in Thirumalapuram near Kadayanallur to attend a marriage function, went to take a bath along with several of her relatives. There was a strong wind blowing and a tree on the river bank uprooted and fell on the victims.
A police team rushed to the spot conducted inquiries. A case has been registered.
