The Indian hockey team has given the country plenty to celebrate on Diwali night as they've beaten the arch-rivals Pakistan 3-2 to be crowned as the champions of Asia. In many ways it is also a fitting tribute to the martyred Indian soldiers who've lost their lives owing to Pakistan's recent ceasefire violation at the borders.

In a keenly contested final at the Kuantan hockey stadium in Malaysia, India rode on goals from Rupinder Pal Singh, Affan Yousef and Nikin Thimmiah to clinch the gold medal at the 2016 Asian Champions Trophy.

It was India's first title win after five years since a shootout win in 2011 over Pakistan.

Leading the team today was Rupinder Pal Singh who scored through a penalty corner in the 18th minute to give India the lead. Young Affan Yousef doubled that lead in the 23rd minute with a field goal but three minutes later Pakistan's Aleem Bilal pulled one back in the 26th.

Pakistan dominated the third quarter and the goal from Ali Shan in the 38th minute was proof of that but it was Nikin Thimmaiah's sensasional stickwork in the 51st minute that turned out to be the last goal of the game that would give India the trophy.
