DHANBAD: A 35-year-old
Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP - 5)
jawan, posted in
Deoghar and deputed at Gawan police station in
Giridih, died after he accidentally shot himself from his service rifle on Saturday.
Santosh Kumar Singh (35), a resident of Buxur district in Bihar, was cleaning his service rifle (INSAS) when he accidentally pushed the trigger. A bullet from the chamber struck his neck and he sustained serious injuries, police said.
Unconfirmed sources from the police department revealed Singh was suffering from acute depression for the past few days and had stopped conversation with his colleagues. "This is a case of suicide," a police officer said on condition of anonymity.
DSP (hq- 1) Vijay
Ashish Kujur confirmed the incident and said the victim was immediately rushed to Giridih Sadar hospital where he succumbed to his injuries even before he could be provided with required medical treatment.
"His colleagues at Gawan Police station said he accidentally fired the bullet from his service rifle (INSAS) while cleaning it today afternoon," Kujur said.
"Recently, Singh faced departmental proceedings after he was found absent from duty without any formal information to the authorities concerned. But nearly a fortnight ago, he resumed his job," Kujur said, adding that a high level enquiry is likely to be set up by the senior JAP authorities to probe the matter.
The body was brought to Giridih Police Line after post-mortem for guard of honour.
