To save honour, 17-yr-old girl immolates self in Kakori

Lucknow: A 17-year old girl who had set herself on fire following persistent harassment by a man died at Civil Hospital on Friday night. The man has been arrested.
A resident of Kakori, the girl lived with her parents and was a student of class VIII. A village youth Kallu (22) developed a fancy to her and started stalking and harassing her. A month ago, the miscreant forcibly stopped her on the way to school and proposed to her.He allegedly misbehaved with her when she declined his proposal. According to her parents, the girl complained to her parents that she could not concentrate on studies because of the harassment. On Thursday, she was returning home when Kallu approached her again. The girl rebuked him and threatened to lodge complaint with the police.
At this, the miscreant thrashed her in full public view. The cold response of those witnessing the scene left the girl depressed. Humiliated, she locked herself in her room. Later, she set herself on fire.
CO, Malhiabad Rohit Sajwan said neighbours saw smoke billowing from the window. They informed her parents and broke open the doors to find her with burn injuries. She was rushed to the hospital where she died on Friday night, Sajwan said.
