SITUATION
Various functions in the vehicle are not operating. This includes instruments, door locks, wipers and other body electrical functions. This can also be accompanied by instrument cluster warning lamps, including the check control message “Electronic Malfunction.”
CAUSE
K-CAN wiring in the vehicle shorted in various locations.
PROCEDURE
Troubleshoot any K-CAN communication faults by completing the CAN Analysis test plan with ISTA. This test plan will automatically be linked to the faults stored in the vehicle. If the test plan results state that the root cause of the communication errors is the K-CAN (wiring), follow the guidelines for reported areas where the wiring may be shorted.
INFORMATION
The following is a list of areas in the vehicle that have been known to cause K-CAN wiring faults. Repair and reposition the harness to prevent the short from happening again. (from top to bottom)
• Under the steering column: The harness can rub against the bracket lip. Repair the harness and secure away from the steering column.
• Under the center console: Check the area at the rear of the center console where the harness runs under the support bracket.
• Under the front passenger seat: The harness may be pinched between the seat rail and the floor. Picture is shown with the seat and carpet removed.
• Right rear section of the luggage compartment: The harness may rub on the body sheet metal near the power distribution box.
• Near the front subwoofers: Remove the front carpet section and inspect the harness near both subwoofers.
• Under the passenger footwell: The harness to the DSC sensor can be shorted. Repair and re-route the harness.
• Right rear section of the luggage compartment for water intrusion: Check the right rear section of the luggage compartment for any signs of water intrusion in the connectors or control modules. Repair the corrosion, identify and repair the water leak source. Check sunroof drains, harness grommets at the body, and body seams.
