FROM the moment the Swans went from South Melbourne to Sydney in 1982, planes have been required to ferry teams between states.

The arrival of West Coast for the 1987 season made travel a regular occurrence for the Eagles and nowadays Victorian clubs generally have more than five interstate trips every season.

And like most quirks in the modern day fixture, the bigger the team, the better the travel itinerary.

The 2017 schedule is no different, with Collingwood set to travel less than any other club. Predictably, West Coast and Fremantle will cover the most distance, although Gold Coast is not far behind them.

The Suns travel to China to take on Port Adelaide in Round 8 which undoubtedly bumps up their kilometres clocked.

The Eagles will travel 50,402km more than the Magpies next year. That’s transit time that could be spent recovering, preparing or sleeping.
