The Bengaluru Police Thursday arrested four local youths in connection with the October 16 murder of an RSS leader in the city. The police have claimed that the RSS secretary for the communally sensitive Shivajinagar area of Bengaluru, R Rudresh (37), was killed on account of his rapid growth as a local leader and due to his skirmishes with members of the Muslim community in the region. The arrested persons were identified as Mohammed Sadiq alias Mohammed Mazar (35), Mohammed Mujibulla alias Moula alias Mujib (44), Wasim Ahmed (30), and Irfan Pasha (30), all residents of Bengaluru.

The RSS leader was hacked to death while he was talking to his three associates on the busy Kamaraj Road in central Bengaluru at noon on October 16. The murder occurred shortly after the conclusion of an RSS route march in the area where Rudresh had played a key role. Police picked up initial leads in the case from the CCTV footage sourced from homes and stores in the bylanes of the Shivajinagar area where the murder occurred. The CCTV footage revealed that a six-member gang was involved in the execution of the murder. “They murdered Rudresh because he was growing rapidly in political stature in his locality. He also had a lot of problems with people from the other community.

Investigations are on to find others involved in the murder and the conspiracy,’’ Bengaluru Police Commissioner N S Megharikh said. Police sources indicated that the arrested persons were part of a new political organisation that had apparently evolved from the ranks of a radical Muslim youth outfit.

“The accused have confessed to the crime. Based on the CCTV footage from the area surrounding the crime scene and descriptions given by eyewitnesses we zeroed down on the accused,” said Megharikh.

Wasim, Mujib and Mazar work as mechanics at a garage, while Irfan Pasha is an air-conditioning technician.
