NEW DELHI: New Zealand’s 19-run win over India in Ranchi on Wednesday has leveled the five-ODI series at 2-2 and set up a tantalizing decider at the tongue-twisting Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, on the outskirts of
Visakhapatnam.
Sticking to calling it the ACA-VDCA Stadium, lets take a look at the ground’s history. And lets hope the predicted cyclone doesn’t hit Visakhapatnam.
Established in 2003, the stadium has a capacity of 38,000. It has hosted five ODIs between 2005 and 2013, all of which featured India. Of those, India won four and lost one.
The first was against Pakistan on April 5, 2005 and India were victorious by 58 runs in the game that made a rookie
MS Dhoni an instant superstar, following his audacious 148 from the No 3 spot. India went on to win their next three ODIs in Visakhapatnam, beating Sri Lanka by seven wickets in 2007 and Australia by five wickets in 2010 and West Indies by five wickets in 2011.
Their only loss at the ground came on November 24, 2013 when West Indies chased a target of 289 with two wickets and three deliveries remaining. In October 2014, an ODI between India and West Indies was called off owing to a cyclone in south India.
One T20I has been played at the ACA-VDCA Stadium, which India won on February 14, 2016. Chasing 83, India beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets with 37 balls remaining. The ground is slated to host its first Test match in November when India play England in the second of five matches.
Apart from these aforementioned international fixtures, the venue has hosted seven IPL matches, five Champions League T20 matches and several domestic games.
