KOLKATA: Investigations into the Beliaghata shooting on Tuesday night has led police to a former armyman, Dibakar Dey, 36, who had not only created fake profiles of himself in leading matrimonial sites to cheat a woman but also confined and repeatedly raped her.
Dey was involved in a relationship with a sub-inspector who passed on information from the Beliaghata police station that was investigating his crimes.
The SI even allegedly threatened the victim. A departmental inquiry has been ordered against her.
“It is a rare crime that involves intimidation, illicit relationships, repeated rape in confinement and an attempt to life,“ said a detective department veteran.
The 28-year-old victim was married to a Panihati resident but got separated within one-and-a-half years. The divorce proceedings are on. She reactivated her old matrimonial account and came across Dey last year.
“The two became friends and the woman visited him at Raiganj where he proposed marriage. After laying hands on her jewellery , he confined her to a hotel, raped her repeatedly and beat her up. She became pregnant but managed to return home.
Thereafter, Dey began making threat calls and opened a fake Facebook profile of the victim. “In it, he described her abuse in graphic detail and claimed the OC was trying to take advantage of her and that it was Dey who was fighting for her,“ claimed an officer. The victim then approached the cyber cell.

On Tuesday night, Dey came to Beliaghata wearing a helmet but the victim's brother spotted him and chased him down even as the accused shot at him. Luckily, the bullet missed the target and he was nabbed.
