Nagpur: Six youths who stabbed a trucker and stole Rs5,000 from him on the Outer Ring Road connecting Amravati Road to Wardha Road in the wee hours of Tuesday were nabbed by Hingna cops within a few hours due to human intelligence.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Zone I DCP Deepali Masirkar, ACP Rajratna Bansod and PI Hemant Kharabe said a tip-off helped arrest the youths. Masirkar said the youngsters were inebriated when they robbed the trucker.
The youths wanted cash for liquor and other expenses, she said. The youths have been remanded to PCR till October 29.
On Tuesday night, three youths had also robbed four toll booths at Wadi, MIDC, Gondkhairi and Dabha in 30 minutes, but were arrested within an hour due to an alert police driver. This was followed by news of this incident at 3am, leaving cops scrambling to trace the culprits.
“The youngsters, all residents of Hingna, consumed liquor at a road side dabha on the outskirts of the city late on Monday night. On the spur of the moment, they decided to rob someone, while heading towards Jamsavli,” said Masirkar. They intercepted Ramesh Patel, a trucker ferrying a load to Pondicherry. They all entered the cabin and thrashed him. Sontakke stabbed him with a knife in the hand and leg when the trucker resisted. The youths snatched Rs5,000 before fleeing the spot.
The victim immediately informed the control room, which dispatched Hingna cops to the spot. The youths were arrested hours later after an informer told police about one Fulzale being involved in a robbery. He was picked up from a dhaba and revealed the names of the other culprits.
The cops arrested Vicky Fulzale, Nilesh Rode alias Golu (26), Pankaj Ghanchakkar alias Sonu (23), Shubham Tete (23), Atish Sontakke (22) and Hrishikesh Korande (20). The vehicle used in the crime is owned by Tete, and is yet to be seized. The youngsters were all dropouts and employed.
Except Ghanchakkar, the other youngsters did not have any previous records. “Ghanchakkar has three prohibition offences at Hingna police station,” said PI Kharabe.
