Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday announced his plan to crack down on consumption of alcohol in open spaces. “November 7 onwards, if people — with criminal intent or otherwise — are found drinking in public, they will face arrest. This is critical for women’s safety. I want to warn that our inspectors have power under the (Delhi Excise) Act,” Sisodia said.

Following an awareness drive after Diwali, anyone caught drinking publicly will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 and anyone creating nuisance in public will be fined Rs 10,000 and face arrest, he added.

Sisodia, who, along with a team of excise officials, raided a liquor shop in Mayur Vihar Phase II on Monday evening, said he found that two shops were functioning with one licence. “Two shops were running on one licence. One was a department store, where a common man can take his family. That is the concept. But alcohol was being sold in the store. Chillers that are used for keeping paneer etc. were stocked with chilled beer. We will take all possible measures to put an end to this,” Sisodia said.

Teams of excise officers will visit every shop in Delhi to make sure they abide by their licence conditions, create no nuisance, and have functional CCTV cameras as directed by the government last year. “I met excise officials this morning. I told them they must also inspect the surrounding areas to check if there are allied businesses. Then CCTV cameras will be installed outside as well to gauge the ambiance of the place,” said Sisodia.
