“The Wardens’ Committee resolves to identify the illegal residents involved in the violence and make the hostel out-of-bounds for them,” it further reads.

But the Dean of Students, in his summary report, said, “An incident of brawl between two students occurred at Mahi-Mandovi hostel around 11 pm on 14th October, 2016. As noted in the Warden’s report, Mr. Vikrant Kumar went to canvass and when he knocked at the door of Mr Najeeb Ahmed, (he) slapped Vikrant without any provocation… The wardens of the hostel had a meeting that night to resolve the issue with some disciplinary measures as Najeeb admitted his mistake of initiating the brawl.”

Taking “strong exception” to the “omission”, the JNUTA in a statement said, “The summary and update of the events at Mahi-Mandavi hostel do not even mention the beating up of Najeeb by a group of students, a fact which has not only been in the public domain but is also categorically mentioned in the statement by the warden, who was an eyewitness. Such omission appears to be deliberate and could put serious questions on the objectivity of the inquiry process.”

JNUTA office bearers said they were “deeply worried over any attempt to give a clean-chit in advance to those who are out there to bring mob-violence in JNU”.

JNU Rector Chintamani Mahapatra said the incident was mentioned as a “scuffle” between students but the administration did not mention it in detail since the matter was under investigation. “In the first instance, Najeeb admitted his mistake so that report was conclusive. In the second case, where Najeeb was allegedly hit, the matter is under serious investigation,” he said.
