Earth mover in Rajkot dies in wall collapse

A 45-year-old driver of an earth mover who was also an employee of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) died on Tuesday morning after a boundary wall on Aji River bank collapsed on him during a demolition drive.

RAJKOT: A 45-year-old driver of an earth mover who was also an employee of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) died on Tuesday morning after a boundary wall on Aji River bank collapsed on him during a demolition drive.
According to sources, the deceased Mahesh Rathod was resident of RMC Quarters near Market Yard in the city. He was working as a driver with the RMC.
The accident occurred at around 8am when the RMC team went to demolish an old public toilet located close to boundary wall on Aji river bank in Bedipara.

However, during the demolition the wall collapsed on the earth mover that Rathod was operating. He was left with no time to escape and got buried under the debris, said police, adding that Rathod died on the spot.
Soon after the accident, RMC announced Rs 8 lakh compensation for Rathod's kin. The public toilet was not in use since last many years. Hence, the civic body decided to demolish it.
