LEZIMA GOMES
DOHA
'Rhapsodic Dreams', an exclusive month-long art exhibition by acclaimed artist Yannis Stylianides, will be held at The Corridor of Grand Hyatt Doha. The exhibition will be held from November 9, under the auspices of Cypriot Minister of Energy, Industry and Tourism Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, while it will be inaugurated by the Ambassador of Cyprus to Qatar HE Charalambos Panayides.
Born in Cyprus, Stylianides completed architectural studies in the United States and returned to Cyprus, where he worked as a self-employed architect. It was in 1999 that he started to create works of art to express his feelings, thoughts, and experiences. ''The creative process brings me a sense of calm and satisfaction that I can't imagine living without. It takes me into a beautiful world that I want to share with everyone through my art,'' he said.
The exhibition includes a series of paintings created using a process he developed and calls"constructive torching", where he creates a composition of paints and then uses a blowtorch to apply the paint to wood, creating a three-dimensional quality that allows the painting to be seen from different angles. One of his main goals is to create art using original methods and distinctive combination of materials.
His passion for sculpting and painting can be seen in the pieces chosen for 'Rhapsodic Dreams', which will be on display during the exhibition. ''I have equal passion for sculpting and painting,'' he said.
Through the exhibition, one will be introduced to Stylianides's exploration of new techniques and materials. About his creative process, he said, ''The whole process begins as a visual concept that I work on mentally until I am ready to execute the piece. For some pieces of art the process takes weeks and others it takes years. This mental process is what drives my art.''
Stylianides's art is housed in many private and public collections in Cyprus, the United States, the United Kingdom, Dubai, Italy, Monaco, France and Greece. A painting from his exhibition titled 'Cities' has being featured in Saatchi Gallery in London. The prestigious Artnet Worldwide Corporation called his latest solo exhibition in Seattle, Washington, a"must-see exhibition."
Supported by the Hyatt Thrive initiative, The Corridor offers a unique gallery space for locally based artists who wish to exhibit their work to the Doha public and international visitors alike. After a successful opening in 2015, and curated by locally based Australian art consultant Pip Hoy, The Corridor has become an important addition to Doha's thriving art scene.
