Barrie's mayor says he's confident a large donation to Georgian College from the city will be paid.

The city has delayed a $1.5 million payment, while it waits for details about Georgian's promise for a downtown expansion.

On Monday night, college president Marylynn West-Moynes told city council that they will be moving a number of design programs downtown in a matter of months.

The donation is the last instalment of a $5-million pledge the city made to the Georgian Health and Wellness Centre in exchange for a downtown expansion promise.

Mayor Jeff Lehman expects council could make a final vote on the donation next week.

He says council recognizes that there's been a lot of discussion and uncertainty about the future of post-secondary education in Barrie over the past few years.
