Karnataka: BJP, JDS clash over Rs 2 crores cash seized from Vidhana Soudha

Political mudslinging began soon as the car owner, senior advocate in Karnataka High Court H M Siddharth, initially gave differing versions to the police about the source and purpose of the money.

THE SEIZURE of Rs 1.97 crore in unaccounted cash from the car of an advocate at the entrance to the Karnataka Assembly has created a political stir amid speculation on its source and destination. Boxes of cash were found in the boot of the car during routine check by the police at the Vidhana Soudha gates on October 21.

While state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa called for a CBI probe, the Janata Dal (Secular) took centre stage as it subsequently emerged that Siddharth had at one point legally represented Yeddyurappa.

On Monday, former chief minister and state JDS chief H D Kumaraswamy created a furore by saying in Hassan that
Yeddyurappa had knowledge of the origin and destination of the money seized. “He has clear knowledge; he can reveal the truth (about) who was sent on the assignment, and how it (money) was organised,” he alleged. Kumaraswamy, however, did not give more details on this.

The BJP hit back by questioning how Kumaraswamy had financed an extravagant film — Jaguar — for his son Nikhil. “This is his usual hit-and-run tactics,” BJP spokesperson Suresh Kumar said, calling it inappropriate to link Yeddyurappa to the advocate simply because he had once legally represented the former CM. “We did not question Kumaraswamy on the expenditure of his son’s film, which was shot overseas. We will not question him because it is not healthy politics,” Kumar said.

Festive offer

Meanwhile, police have deposited the cash in question with a local court. The Income-Tax Department served summons on the advocate who said that it was his money, and he was carrying it to close a property deal.
