The official Maryland chapter of the 501st Legion, a Star Wars costuming group, announced via Twitter that it had finally secured approval from the state’s Motor Vehicle Administration for an organization license-plate for members.

“Official Garrison license plates? Heck yeah!” tweeted the Old Line Garrison. “Big thanks to Matt Morley, TK 4108, for his hard work on this. #501st#StarWars #maryland”

The logo on the Old Line Garrison license plate incorporates the design of the Maryland flag within the imperial crest of the Galactic Empire, the authoritarian regime of the sci-fi franchise’s original trilogy.

According to the MVA, nonprofit organizations of at least 25 members may apply for an organizational license plate from the state agency.

Founded in 1997, the 501st Legion — “The World’s Definitive Imperial Costuming Organization” — is frequently involved through its various chapters in civic and charity functions.

“While we do not charge a fee for appearances (public or private), we enthusiastically welcome donations made to your favorite charity in the name of the 501st Legion,” the organization says on an FAQ page.
