LUCKNOW: Priya (name changed), at only 30 years of age, not just weighed 98 kilograms but also developed such high levels of cholesterol that nothing seemed to work. Until she underwent bariartic surgery at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) a year ago and is now at 62 kilograms with normal cholesterol levels. Observing World Obesity Day, a unique set of patients, who were once morbid obese and sought the help of bariartic surgery, will be coming together at RMLIMS on Thursday to talk about the success of their surgery.
"The hospital has been running a bariartic unit with specialists, psychologists, dietitians and even a self help group for the patients to follow upand engage with one another," said Dr Subhrat Chandra, chief medical superintendent (CMS), RMLIMS.
"Bariatric surgery is an option for the morbid obese as they have run out of options of weight loss," said Dr Anshuman Pandey, associate professor at surgical gastroenterology department running the bariatric surgery unit at RMLIMS. "It is to be understood that This surgery is not cosmetic but treats multiple disorders due to excessive obesity," he added.
Another patient from Fatehpur, a 38-year-old woman, will also be a part of the group on Thursday, who treated her weight issues which were leading to heightened level of arthritis and lumbar problems. "My weight had crossed 100 kilograms and I had excessive pain in the spinal nerves and knees," she said. "Now I feel light, my health has improved and so has my self esteem," she added, having lost 20 kilograms.
Breaking the myth that a 'fashionable diet' - where people eat one food or fruit for days - or crash diet can lead to weight loss, head dietician, RMLIMS said, "Such diets have a 'yoyo effect' where they gain more weight once they discontinue."
